LEAD THEFT FROM SOUTH AISLE ROOF
Many have been shocked to hear that lead was stripped from the south aisle roof in the early morning of Thursday last. Rain did get in before contractors were able to put temporary coverings in place, and the aisle was roped off in case the ceilings fell.
Pat Chapman and Andrew Rudd have been working hard to protect the church and we are grateful to all who have helped them. Roy Belsham was quick off the mark in beginning the process of sorting out what to do, and our architect has been instructed. We coped well on Sunday morning and we are grateful to everyone for their co-operation.
We are aware that though much of the damage is covered by insurance, there is a cap on this and we are still vulnerable. We urgently need to raise funds to protect the building and prevent a recurrence as well as repairing the damage. Accordingly we are making an Emergency Appeal to all who love this building and what it stands for. The Appeal's patrons are the Bishop of Chelmsford and the Archdeacon of Colchester and we hope to have a Gift Day and a number of events.
We do need to keep up our usual income to pay our way so we are inviting additional donations. We know that many people feel that they have a stake in this building, and we want to give them an opportunity to help us now. Contributions may be sent to our Treasurer, Mr Rod Lane.
Whatever you give will be very gratefully received.
